Fall Colours in South Tyrol

Words and Photos: Rishad Daroowala

If there is such thing as a happy place, the Dolomite Mountains may be mine…

Last month we returned to South Tyrol to see the changing fall colours and to hike up to the Rifugio Alpe Di Tires (Hut) in the German speaking region of Northern Italy. The hike itself was about 7.5km up the mountain ridge. As it was the last day of the season to overnight at the hut, we encountered quite a bit of ice on our way up… making a 3.5 hour hike look more like 6. Most of the images below come from the peak – about 2438m elevation. The others are from the Tre Cime di Lavaredo – the famous 3 peaks. Here we waited several hours to catch a glimpse of these giant formations as the fog lifted for us just before sundown.

Thank you to Visit South Tyrol for being gracious hosts during our visit.
