Arc’teryx athlete Greg Hill is a mountain slayer. He has ski toured more vertical in a month than some of us do in a lifetime. We asked Greg to test our new Lithic Comp system during his epic mountain missions. Here is what he has to say about the gear…
Words and Photos by Greg Hill
I tested the Lithic Comp system during my March Madness challenge, where I averaged 10 580 ft. up each day for the entire month. I found this system to be the perfect blend of breathability with weather protection, ideal for ski touring around the mountains. The new Lithic Comp system allowed me to run around in the mountains of BC comfortably, yet be ready for inclement weather, which was frequent as March saw the most precipitation Revelstoke has seen during one month in the last 20 years.
Fit and Benefits:
The cut is tight, which allows for great freedom of movement and is not as "bro" as our more relaxed fits. It allows for a great stride, unimpeded steps and is easy to use with crampons. While boot packing up through deep powder the snow slides off my GORE® Fabric Technology thighs while the backs of my legs are Trusaro™ softshell and dump heat to keep me moving uphill. Another thing I really like about the lithic pants is the bib. I have always loved bibs but not the added heat from them, the lithic is the perfect minimalist bib, just enough to prevent skin exposure without anything extra. The suspenders are also great for freedom of movement, allowing your pants to stay in the right place without hindering my walk up. It’s so nice to feel protected while not heating up too much.
Ski touring places such contrasting demands on the gear we use. Due to the high aerobic demands the clothing needs to be very breathable, but also very weather proof for mountain conditions. Under full on wild and wet mountain conditions you don’t have 100% weather protection so a full GORE-TEX® system is still optimal for the crazy weather. This new softshell system is great for when the sky is blue and you are working hard to earn your turns.
Overall, the benefits that the Lithic Comp offers using the unique blend of fabrics are incredible, making this system ideal for people who like to get out into the mountains and accomplish as much as they can.
